Biography

A Career Built on Clinical Excellence

Prof Steve Goode is a Consultant Vascular and Interventional Radiologist with over 20 years of experience treating venous disease using modern, minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided techniques. He trained in medicine at the University of Leicester and completed a PhD in vascular surgery at the University of Nottingham — research that contributed directly to the evidence base now guiding how varicose veins are treated across the UK.

He undertook advanced fellowship training in Interventional Radiology and has spent his consultant career working at the forefront of minimally invasive vascular treatment within the NHS at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust — one of the UK’s leading tertiary vascular centres.

Alongside his private practice at Sheffield Vein Clinic, Prof Goode continues his NHS consultant work, which includes complex arterial and venous interventions, emergency vascular procedures, and — uniquely — percutaneous aortic arch repair. This breadth of high-level clinical experience underpins the meticulous, reassuring approach he brings to every vein clinic appointment.

Private Practice Philosophy

Prof Goode specialises in the assessment and treatment of varicose veins, focusing on relieving symptoms, improving appearance, and helping patients return quickly to normal life. His approach is calm, transparent, and consultant-led from first consultation through to follow-up. He will always tell patients honestly when treatment is not in their best interest. Clinical integrity — not volume — defines the practice at Sheffield Vein Clinic.

Common Questions

About Prof Goode & the Clinic

Will Prof Goode personally perform my treatment?
Yes, always. Prof Goode personally conducts every consultation, every duplex ultrasound scan, every procedure, and every follow-up appointment at Sheffield Vein Clinic. There are no locum or rotating clinicians. You will see the same consultant throughout your entire journey.
What is the difference between a vascular surgeon and an interventional radiologist for vein treatment?
Both can perform endovenous vein treatments effectively. As an Interventional Radiologist, Prof Goode works under real-time ultrasound and imaging guidance for all procedures — a core skill that underpins his precision and safety record. His background in complex vascular intervention means he is experienced with cases many vein-only practitioners would find challenging.
Does Prof Goode work privately only, or does he also work in the NHS?
Prof Goode continues to hold a full NHS consultant post at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, where he performs complex vascular procedures including aortic repair and emergency interventions. Sheffield Vein Clinic is his private practice — entirely separate from the NHS but built on the same clinical standards.
How long will I wait for a consultation?
Typically less than two weeks from your initial enquiry to your first consultation with Prof Goode. We aim to accommodate urgent cases more quickly where possible.
Does Prof Goode treat complex or recurrent varicose veins?
Yes — and he actively welcomes them. Many patients referred to Sheffield Vein Clinic have been told their veins are too complex, or have had previous treatment that has failed. Prof Goode's experience with complex vascular cases in the NHS means he is well placed to assess and manage exactly these situations.
Is Sheffield Vein Clinic CQC registered?
Yes. Sheffield Vein Clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. CQC registration ensures the clinic meets required standards of safety, effectiveness, and quality of care.
