Why Patients Seek Thermavein

Many patients come to Sheffield Vein Clinic after years of managing their symptoms with compression stockings, or after being turned away from NHS treatment. At Sheffield Vein Clinic, your consultation includes a duplex ultrasound assessment performed personally by Prof Steve Goode — so the right treatment is recommended from your very first appointment.

What Is Thermavein?

Thermavein is a medical-grade thermocoagulation system designed for the treatment of thread veins on the face and legs. An ultra-fine insulated probe is applied to the skin surface or just below it, delivering a precisely controlled pulse of high-frequency electrical current. This generates localised heat that seals the vessel on contact — without affecting surrounding skin tissue.

Unlike microsclerotherapy, no substance is injected into the body. Thermavein is particularly well suited for facial thread veins (where sclerotherapy is not used), for very fine red vessels that respond less well to injection, and for patients who prefer a needle-free approach.

At Sheffield Vein Clinic, Thermavein is used by Prof Steve Goode as both a primary treatment and alongside microsclerotherapy for more complex cases.

Is Thermavein Right for Me?

Suitability is always confirmed by Prof Goode at your initial consultation, which includes a duplex ultrasound assessment.

Facial thread veins on nose, cheeks and chin

Fine red lines and broken capillaries on the face — Thermavein is purpose-designed for these delicate vessels

Rosacea-related thread veins

Thermavein significantly reduces visible thread veins associated with rosacea (treats vessels, not the underlying condition)

Very fine red thread veins on the legs

Fine red vessels that respond less well to sclerotherapy injection are often better treated with thermocoagulation

Patients who prefer a needle-free approach

The probe is applied to the skin surface — no injection into the vessel itself. Suitable alternative to microsclerotherapy for appropriate presentations

How Thermavein Works — Step by Step

01 Consultation and Assessment

Prof Goode examines the treatment area and confirms the most appropriate approach. For leg thread veins, a duplex ultrasound assessment is performed to check for underlying venous issues.

02 Skin Preparation

The treatment area is cleaned. For facial treatment, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied if preferred. No anaesthetic is typically needed for leg treatment.

03 Thermocoagulation Treatment

Using the Thermavein handpiece, Prof Goode treats each individual thread vein. A brief, precisely controlled pulse of energy seals the vessel on contact. Results often partially visible immediately.

04 Immediate Aftercare

Facial: some redness expected — settles within hours. Avoid makeup 24–48 hours. Legs: compression stocking applied. Walk immediately.

05 Review and Ongoing Plan

Results reviewed at 4–6 weeks. For isolated thread veins, one to two sessions often produces an excellent outcome.

Recovery Timeline

  • Same day — Return to normal daily activities.
  • 1–2 weeks — Compression hosiery worn as instructed.
  • 2 weeks — Avoid heat, saunas and vigorous exercise.
  • 6–8 weeks — Follow-up review to assess response.

What Results Can I Expect?

Many patients notice partial results immediately after Thermavein as treated vessels seal on contact with the probe. Full results develop progressively over four to six weeks.

For isolated thread veins, one to two sessions often produces a very satisfying outcome. More extensive areas — such as widespread rosacea-related thread veins — may require additional sessions and ongoing maintenance. Prof Goode will give you an honest assessment of what can realistically be achieved for your individual presentation. See our pricing page for session costs.

Thermavein — Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients describe a brief sting or flick of heat at each treatment point. The face is more sensitive than the legs, but the procedure is generally well tolerated. A topical numbing cream can be applied to the face beforehand for more sensitive patients.
Thermavein delivers thermocoagulation energy directly to each vessel via a fine probe. Laser treatments deliver energy through the skin using light absorbed by vessel pigment. Thermavein is more precise for individual thread veins and is suitable for all skin tones, including those where laser carries higher risk of pigmentation change.
For isolated thread veins, one or two sessions often produces a very satisfying result. More extensive areas may require additional sessions. Prof Goode will give you a realistic assessment at your initial consultation.
Thermavein can effectively reduce the visible thread veins associated with rosacea. However, it treats the vessels — not the underlying rosacea condition itself. New thread veins may develop over time, requiring ongoing maintenance treatment.
For leg treatment, minimal downtime — some redness and sensitivity for 24–48 hours. For facial treatment, redness for a few hours and occasionally minor crusting at treatment points resolving within a week. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF to treated facial areas for two weeks.
